We Do Not Work Alone
Duo exhibition at Yūkari Studio, Helsinki FI
We Do Not Work Alone is a collaboration between two visual artists, Valentina Černiauskaitė and Danielle Yukari.
Through this exhibition, we reflect on material, time, and ritual. During the spring this year, we visited each other’s studios, opened up our practices and shared our curiosities, but most of all, we drank tea and read books together, talked about our lives and ancestors, and took those rituals seriously enough for them to influence the making of our works.
We Do Not Work Alone is a dialogue, an exchange and an opportunity. It sets aside the pressure to constantly produce new ideas, instead embracing cycles, repetition, and looking back at what makes our practices our own. The exhibition is both the record and the result of an ongoing conversation between two artists, and what they have in common.
The title refers to Yoshiko Uchida’s publication on the Japanese potter Kanjiro Kawai, and hints at the idea that making is never an isolated act, but a process shaped by many forces beyond the human hand.
