海外 Kaigai

 Exhibition AT THE TABLE, Hiroshima-JP

海 (kai, meaning “ocean”) and 外 (gai, meaning “outside”) together form 海外 (kaigai), which can be translated as “beyond the sea”.

Yukari, who has roots in Japan and Brazil, has continued her artistic practice over the past decade, while moving between New York, Los Angeles, and Helsinki.

The artist uses "kaigai" metaphorically to express the sense of displacement that accompanies her practice, as well as the idea of a body moving across continents—crossing seas and building bridges—an experience reflected both in her own life and in the lives of her ancestors.

This exhibition, marking the first presentation of Yukari’s work in Japan, introduces symbolic objects present in daily rituals of the East and West, showing her influences from both due to her lived experience.
